Curt Prina - “Das Digitale Klangwunder” (Wersi 1984)
A few weeks ago I made a trip down to Philadelphia to go to the CZW pay per view and see Drew Gulak and Davey Havok mix it up in a no ropes barbed wire match. It was pretty awesome, but what was more awesome was before the show getting cheesesteaks and going record shopping on South St. While there we hit up Repo Records where I came across this gem.
It’s pretty much all in German, but the title is translated into English and “Das Digital Klangwunder” translates to “The Digital Sound Sensation”. What I’ve gathered is that this record is a sampler of recordings all made with Wersi electric pianos to show the instruments range. I also have gathered that the record was sent to music stores in a promotional way so they could decide if they wanted to sell the pianos. Whatever the case may be, this record is so awesome. There is no groundbreaking music on here, it’s all arrangements of classical pieces, or jazz standards, or famous soundtrack pieces, played on one of these pianos. But fuck its so much fun, and hearing these sounds they are so rudimentary sounding compared to the synths that exist nowadays. Such a great find.
Even though these are all standards, the sound created on these pianos remind me of soundtracks to early 90’s Super Nintendo games Like Earthbound or the Super Mario RPG and of course the Clockwork Orange soundtrack. I love shit like this so much. It’ll fit nicely with my switched on Bach records and some of my MOOG records.
