Water Torture/Six Brew Bantha - split (Nice Dreams Records 2013)
So I got to see both of these bands like 2 weeks ago at ABC No Rio in Manhattan, both of whom I had never heard before the show, and GOTDAMN were they impressive. I had to own this split, which I now do, thanks to the magical wonders of the merch table.
Water Torture hail from upstate NY, further upstate then me even, and play sweet ass power violence. On this 7 inch they have three members, but when they played they only had two, just a guitarist and a drummer/vocalist. Any band that has a drummer that does a large amount of the vocals impresses the hell out of me. Actually both the bands on this split have a drummer/vocalist. Anyway, the easiest (and therefore optimum) way to describe this band is they sound like Iron Lung. So that’s what I’m doing. But fo’ rizzle, some of the most excellent PV I’ve heard in a long time.
Six Brew Bantha occupy the other side of this record cold blue record, a color like the cold country they hail from, Canada. I can easily say SBB had one of the best sets I’ve seen this year, and I’ve seen a lot of amazing bands this year so far. SBB play a crazy variety of grindcore, the kind with pointy band logos and crossed out musical notes. They remind me a lot of Magrudergrind, like split with Godstomper era Magrudergrind, you know, the best era of Magrudergrind. All three members of the band do vocals and it really adds to the chaos. I love this shit. I also picked up their LP that day and it’s just as good as this, if not better.
Track this record down or forever pose hard.

Archagathus/Iron Butter - split (Bringer Of Gore Records 2012)
You couldn’t ask for a better split; in my mind at least. Some others might think you were crazy to say so. Mostly because of the violent noise offered on these two sides of this record.
Archagathus offer there signature style of ripping off paying tribute to Agathocles. This shit rips. I wasn’t sure what speed to be playing it on, because it sounds awesome at both 33 and 45. So fucking brutal and fast. n This is how all grindcore should sound; fuck technical bullshit. Crossed out music notes forever!
Iron Butter also bring the noise, with I would say is there best material. 16 short noisecore blasts centering around an insane Kiss cover. This is noisecore done right; with a sense of humor. If these guys were serious, this would suck. I mean it does suck, but in the best way possible. I don’t know. Get this in your life.

Robocop/Detroit - “Dead Language, Foreign Bodies” split (Give Praise Records 2012)
Being a huge fan of Robocop, the great, if not greatest movie about a robotic cop, buying a record by a band called Robocop was a no brainer. Add the fact that there is another band on the record called Detroit, the city Robocop happens in, and well sheeet, I couldn’t give up my money fast enough.
Turns out that the tunes on here are solid as well! Robocop occupies the a side of this record. They provide the listener with 6 solid grindcore by ways of brutal hardcore tracks that make stops along experimental electronics town. I normally don’t dig of super clean production in my grindcore, but this side is just right, a perfect blend of thick heavy as fuck guitar tones and clean drums, but the vocals are insane and dirty, which helps keep everything in perspective. Or something.
Detroit, who come from somewhere in Canada, are the winners of bringing the mosh on this record. They play that power violence stuff that seems to be all the rage worldwide right now, and they play it well. Compared to Robocop’s side, this sounds like it was recorded in a closet, there is like no low end on here, probably so the brutal riffs sting your ears that much more. Or something. Love this shit out of this.

Brody’s Militia/Widespread Bloodshed - split (Sound Pollution 2003)
Fuck. This record is insane.
Brody’s Militia starts things of with super fast hardcore punk. Thrash if you will. Their side is bookended with two GG Allin covers, so I was sold before I even listened to them. They are fucking awesomely done. The rest of the side is insanely fast hardcore, as I mentioned already. They are members of Hellnation, so they sound like them, just more punky. I saw theses guys once in my friends garage, around the time this came out. They fucking destroyed.
Widespread Bloodshed bring it. If BM’s side is awesome, WSBS (WB?) is fucking ignorant. Like it’s kind of stupid how fucking fast this band is. But they are fast, but have this killer guitar tone so you hear all the riffs clearly, rather than just a blur of distortion (which isn’t bad don’t get me wrong). I have their split with Massgrav, which is equally as fast, but I haven’t listened to that in a while. I’m seriously speechless, but this band is unreal.
Great record. Also look at the cover! So awesome.

SO MANY RECORDS TO LISTEN TO.
Bastard Noise - “The Progression Of Sickness” (Deep Six Records 2012)
I wasn’t going to post anything about this, I’m currently thinning out a 250+ stack of records that I need to listen to before I do some serious reviewing this week. I don’t know if I’ve ever said this before, but for every record I post on here I probably have like 30-40 that I have to listen to at any given time. I’ve gotten so many in the last 2 months it’s kind of disgusting.
Anyway, this Bastard Noise record is probably the best material that has come out with the two skulls gracing the cover. No joke. That includes Man Is The Bastard. Yes I’m serious. There is two tracks on here of sludgy, manic (but precise), heavy powerviolence. Like The bass tone is perfect, the vocals are perfect, the drums are perfect, the electronics are perfect. Everything clicks together on this record and the energy of a band knowing they are doing great things is captured and fuck. I can’t say enough good about this record. AND IT’S A 10”! MY FAVORITE FORMAT! Just get it sucka.

Disleksick/Cum Sock -split (Coffin Crawl Records 2012)
It will always blow my mind how clear lathe records are. Like they are almost not there! I just wish they sounded better. Like they are always buried in surface noise.
Not that fidelity would help these two bands. Disleksick hail from the great white north, in London, Ontario, Canada. They play violent, shitty (meant in the most positive way possible), fucked up noise grind, and they do it very well. I want to say that they are like all the other blur/noisecore bands out there, but they have been doing this for quite some time, and really have carved out their niche in the genre. Like this is sophisticated noisecore, with brutal riffs occasionally poking out through the feedback and blast beats. Great side.
Cum Sock is new to me. Other than having probably the best name ever, they also hail from Canada, but this time Toronto. Unfortunately their side isn’t as good as their name is. They play kind of grindcore/kind of metalcore/kind of death metal but don’t really hit any of those bases, and not in a genre-bending technical wizardry sort of way. It’s just kind of weak. They are obviously a joke band, but they are pretty awful. And their liberal use of pig-squeal vocals is very annoying. I’m so fucking glad that fad died out almost as fast as it started.
I would say to pick this up for Disleksick’s side, but there are only 20 copies in the world and I’m pretty sure they are all spoken for.

Knelt Rote “Trespass” (Nuclear War Now! Productions 2012)
When I heard Nuclear War Now was putting out a grindcore album, I was a bit surprised. The label usually specializes in brutal death metal, insane black metal, and reissuing essential metal albums of the past that would otherwise be impossible for most people to hear. After a quick browse through their discography, I don’t see any albums that could really be classified as grindcore. So I was super intrigued by this album just to see what grindcore would be released by NWN.
To my disappointment, I wouldn’t really call this grindcore. Knelt Rote hail from Portland, Oregon and the dudes that comprise this band are also in other killer groups (one of which is most notably a member of L’Acephale who are incredible). So I don’t really know where to classify Knelt Rote genre-wise. The songs are to complicated to be grindcore, but on the other hand, they are to brutal to be called black metal. Another disappointment is that the sticker on the sleeve this came in said they combine harsh noise into their sound, but I really don’t hear it; mostly on a few intros and outros, not as much during actual songs. If you know me, I loves me some harsh noise.
Don’t let all of this negative talk turn you away however. Knelt Rote is an amazing fucking band. Musically I’d say they combine the controlled chaos that is Revenge with a dusting Cannibal Corpse or something. What you get is truly an insane listening experience. All sorts of shit is going on here, pitch-shifted vocals, jackhammer drum rolls and brutal black metal riffs. All of this wrapped in a gorgeous gatefold sleeve with strange cover art (you can’t tell from the picture, but there is a logo somewhere on there!). I don’t know. I’m a little out of it right now. But this is a killer record and would fit nicely in your collection if you love insane music as much as I do.

Get To The Chopper/Orphan Donor - split (Square Of Opposition Records 2012)
I love ordering stuff from Square Of Opposition, they always send a metric fuckton (acutal unit of measurement, look it up) of stuff along with their releases. I don’t know if it’s because I’m special and preordered the “skittle vomit” version of this record (though to me it looks more like fruity pebbles in soy milk) but I got a ton of stuff, like a ripped out page from an old children’s book, some Where’s Waldo stickers, lots of SOO Records stickers, and other fun stuff. Also this records cover is all sorts of silk screened and real purty. I highly suggest ordering from this label, you really can feel the love in each record. Let’s get down to the tunes shall we?
Orphan Donor’s side is pretty interesting, there are like 7 crazy mathy hardcore tracks similar to As The Sun Sets or stuff like that. Stuff with manic double bass breakdowns with fireworks guitar blazes and/or blastbeats in between. But they have a trumpet player which makes for a seriously off-putting and/or enjoyable and interesting experience for everyone involved. In my case it was just me listening, so just me.
Get To The Chopper mellow things out on their side. And by mellow things out I mean they don’t sound like Dillinger Escape Plan with horns. They play a brutal heavy hardcore style with grindcore and death metal elements thrown in for fun. It reminds me of stuff like later Reversal Of Man mixed with I don’t know, Neil Perry and a wee bit of Pig Destroyer for flavor. But despite these comparisons, I wouldn’t call them screamo or grindcore. I don’t know. The riffs contained within these songs are fucking catchy as hell and really are worth the record alone.
Get To The Chopper win this split for sure, but Orphan Donor’s side is excellent too. Square Of Opposition do it again for sure. Go buy this and every other record they’ve released.

So it was my birthday this weekend, and I went to The Power Of The Riff East. Needless to say I went record shopping (at Darkside Gallery in Poughkeepsie and Heaven Street Records in Brooklyn) treated myself to a few things.

Column Of Heaven - “Mission From God” (SPHC 2012)
Let me first say, I was a huge The Endless Blockade fan. HUGE. I have a good chunk of there discography, got to see them play a few times, and spent a good portion of the last few years of my life enjoying them in some way. I was super bummed to hear they called it quits, but conversely, I was super stoked to hear about Column Of Heaven, which is the next phase of some of EB’s members.
Somehow I missed out on getting copies of their first two demos, but I jumped at the chance to obtain this glorious slab of wax. This Canadian crew called Column of Heaven really jump off where The Endless Blockade left off. This record is a varied, and tremendous undertaking; an amazing blend of grindcore and power violence, with ample dashes of noise and discordant ambience peppered throughout. Such a delicious concoction of sonic cruelty, any fan of grind or pv must purchase this. NOW. The Survivalist bandcamp page has this available for download at name your own price, so really you have no excuse. I can’t wait until they tour the States so I can lose my mind to them live. Fuck this record is good.
