SSORC - “Infidel Eternal” (Magic Bullet Records 2011)
I know what you are all wondering. What does SSORC stand for? It was a question I was pondering for quite sometime, but it doesn’t stand for anything. SSORC is the word cross backwards. My guess is that they always capitalize SSORC because of two reasons: 1. They are Japanese and it seems the Japanese really like to capitalize English words for some reason. 2. Because “Ssorc” looks stupid. Anyway, if you didn’t guess from the Old English font and the upside down crosses, SSORC is a black metal band. After scouring the internet for info on these guys I learned to my excitement that the drummer is Ironfist, of the legendary band GISM. That being said, the record isn’t really anything amazing.
I mean, this is a pretty standard black metal record. The second side has some pretty feral moments that hint on a Revenge level of psychosis, but for the most part this reminds me of the standards, pre-Blizzard Beasts Immortal, and Chimera and later era Mayhem. Actually they sound a lot like Fall Of The Bastards. Like would be easily confused with Fall Of The Bastards.
So all in all, this record is gonna have to fall under the category of, if you love black metal, or if this is your first true black metal release, you are going to think this is pants shittingly amazing. Otherwise its kind of passable. Though I’m gonna go on record and say that this could be a repeat listen kind of has to grow on you sort of record, just to play it safe.
One thing I can say is big ups to Magic Bullet on the bold color choices for the vinyl. Nothing says grim like mint green and brown marble. Makes me want mint chocolate chip ice cream. Really bad. No, wait! Its all coming full circle! The color of the record is to allude to the frostbitten grimness of mint chocolate chip ice cream which is the coldest flavor ice cream can be. Thats how grim and frostbitten the music is! But in all seriousness this is an extremely well done package on Magic Bullet’s part, as they do with all of their vinyl releases. Please support that label, they do great things.

Impaled Northern Moonforest - “Impaled Northern Moonforest” (Menace To Sobriety 2000)
I didn’t think this record actually existed until I got one. I got number 90 out of 200 to be exact. Totally the most grim and frostbitten record ever.
EDIT 9/29: I don’t think you tumblrs appreciate what this record is…It’s Seth Putnam and Josh Martin of Anal Cunt’s black metal side project. It’s just that they decided to start this band in the middle of the night while a friend of theirs was sleeping, so they used an acoustic guitar and Seth played “drums” and did vocals. The drums were him slapping his knees and a bed. They also decided it’s much more kvlt to make up words and have really long song titles (which is true). The most troo example would have to be: “Awaiting The Blasphemous Abomination Of The Necroyeti While Sailing On The Northernmost Fjord Of Xzfgiiizmtsath.” This is TRUE NORWEGIAN BLACK METAL FROM BOSTON. MOST GRIM.
